Floodplain Management Studies and Services

The firm has over 25 years of experience in completing major floodplain management projects, the majority of which are in NSW which leads Australia in the development of floodplain development policy, and the funding and implementation of floodplain management projects.

Fields of Practice
The particular fields of floodplain management in which the firm practices comprise:

  • flood risk assessment and mapping;
  • land use planning and the development of policies to guide development within floodplains;
  • computer simulation of flood behaviour;
  • advice on flood risks associated with climate change and sea level rise, and the management of those risks;
  • community consultation relating to floodplain management problems and their solutions;
  • flood damage assessment;
  • identification, evaluation and implementation of both structural and non-structural flood mitigation options; and
  • emergency management, flood awareness and flood warning.

In addition to the above floodplain management studies, the firm has undertaken related emergency management studies for the State Emergency Service (SES), house raising scheme reviews, strategic planning assessments for floodplains, flood risk surveys and various assessments of the flood risks in caravan parks.

Development of Floodplain Development Policies
One of the most important and effective flood risk reduction components of the above studies has been the development of land use planning policies.  These have facilitated the safe and orderly development, and redevelopment, of floodplains to achieve acceptable levels of flood risk.

Within NSW, the firm has drafted policies or Development Control Plans for the local councils in Wollongong, Eastwood, Mudgee, Berrima, Scone, Liverpool, Sutherland, Ryde, Bankstown, Fairfield, The Hills Shire, Woollahra, Parramatta, Blacktown, Holroyd, Macquarie Park, Auburn, Coffs Harbour, Camden Haven, Dungog, Molong, Paterson and Bowral.
